The United States is significantly expanding its military presence in the Middle East as President Donald Trump weighs whether to resume large-scale strikes against Iran. Washington is sending a third aircraft carrier strike group toward the region along with thousands of additional sailors and Marines, according to US officials cited by multiple reports.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group is heading toward the Middle East, accompanied by the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group. Together, the newly deployed ships carry more than 7,000 sailors and about 2,000 Marines. Their arrival could bring three American aircraft carriers into the region by the end of October.
The USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington are already operating in the region, while the USS Boxer amphibious readiness group is also deployed there. With additional personnel already stationed in the Middle East, the American naval presence could rise above 20,000 sailors and Marines, supported by hundreds of aircraft.
The buildup comes as diplomatic efforts remain uncertain. Iran has proposed measures aimed at ending hostilities, while Trump has rejected the latest proposal and said renewed bombing after the November 3 US midterm elections remains possible.
The military movements have therefore intensified speculation about Washington’s next step. However, current reporting does not indicate that the United States has ordered a ground invasion of Iran. Earlier US officials had similarly said troop deployments were intended to build operational capacity without deciding to send forces into Iran itself.
