Democrats are projected to take control of the US Senate, marking a major setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the 2026 midterm elections. The projection follows a series of significant Democratic victories across key states, including Texas, South Carolina and Kansas.
Before the election, Republicans held 53 seats in the Senate, compared with 47 held by Democrats and independents. Democrats needed a net gain of four seats to secure a majority. The latest projections indicate that they have crossed that threshold. However, vote counting is continuing and the final seat tally may change.
One of the biggest results came from Texas, where Democrat James Talarico defeated Trump-backed Republican Ken Paxton in the Senate race, according to media projections. The victory is particularly significant because Republicans have dominated statewide elections in Texas for decades. Talarico’s win marks a major breakthrough for Democrats in the traditionally Republican state.
Democrats also made gains in South Carolina and Kansas, helping them secure the projected Senate majority. The results have added to the pressure on the Republican leadership after the party’s losses in several other contests.
Earlier projections had also indicated that Democrats were set to take control of the House of Representatives. If both chambers come under Democratic control, Trump could face greater opposition to his legislative plans. Congressional investigations and delays to key bills may also become more likely.
These are media projections, not certified official results. Election authorities must complete the counting and certification process before the final outcome is confirmed.
