United Nations Raises Alarm Over Escalating Unrest In Pakistan Occupied Kashmir Ahead Elections

The United Nations has expressed growing concern over the deteriorating security and human rights situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) ahead of the region’s provincial elections scheduled for July 27. The warning comes after months of protests, political unrest and allegations of excessive force by Pakistani security personnel against demonstrators.

In a statement, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk urged the Government of Pakistan to exercise restraint and take immediate steps to restore peace while ensuring that the rights of peaceful protesters are protected. He also called for transparent and impartial investigations into reports of civilian deaths during recent demonstrations.

The latest concerns follow reports that at least 12 people were killed after Pakistani security forces allegedly opened fire on protesters earlier this week. The incident has intensified criticism of Islamabad’s handling of the unrest and drawn renewed international attention to the volatile situation in the region.

Public anger has reportedly been growing over political, economic and administrative issues, leading to widespread demonstrations across several parts of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Authorities have deployed additional security forces in an effort to maintain order ahead of the upcoming elections.

The UN human rights office stressed that accountability, respect for fundamental freedoms and the protection of civilians are essential to ensuring a credible democratic process. It urged Pakistani authorities to avoid excessive use of force and uphold international human rights obligations during the election period.

With tensions continuing to rise, the international community is closely monitoring developments, as concerns grow that further violence could undermine stability and public confidence in the electoral process.
