US President Donald Trump has promised a potential $5,000 payment to every adult American if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections, unveiling the proposal as his party seeks to strengthen its position ahead of the vote.
Speaking at a campaign-preparation meeting in Dallas, Trump described the proposed payment as a “Trump Dividend” and presented it as a reward for Republican electoral success. He said every adult citizen, regardless of gender, could receive the payment if Republicans win control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The proposed amount of $5,000 would be worth roughly Rs 4.2 lakh at current exchange rates. With an estimated adult population of around 245 million, implementing the proposal could potentially require more than $1 trillion in government spending.
Trump did not provide a detailed explanation of how the proposed payments would be financed. He argued that the United States has substantial financial resources but offered no specific funding mechanism during his remarks.
The proposal comes against a challenging political backdrop for the administration. Inflation and tensions surrounding the Iran conflict have reportedly weighed on Trump’s approval ratings, while Democrats are expected to mount a strong challenge in the congressional elections.
The midterm elections are scheduled for November 3, with all 435 House seats and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats up for election.
Trump also urged supporters to approach the election as though his name were directly on the ballot, underscoring the importance he attaches to Republican control of Congress and the proposed dividend.
