SCO Condemns Attacks, Sanctions on Iran at Bishkek Summit, Reaffirms Unity

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation strongly criticised attacks and unilateral sanctions against Iran at its Bishkek summit, highlighting sovereignty, regional stability and stronger cooperation among member states.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) has strongly criticised attacks and sanctions targeting Iran, with member states calling for greater respect for national sovereignty and international law at the organisation’s summit in Bishkek.

The meeting brought together leaders and senior representatives from SCO member countries amid growing geopolitical tensions and conflicts across several regions. Discussions focused on regional security, economic cooperation, counterterrorism and the need to strengthen multilateral institutions.

The organisation expressed concern over the use of force and unilateral sanctions, particularly measures affecting Iran. Several members emphasised that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomatic channels rather than military action or economic pressure.

The SCO’s position reflects the growing importance of the grouping as a platform for countries seeking greater cooperation outside traditional Western-led institutions. Iran’s role has also become increasingly significant within the organisation as regional tensions continue to shape security and economic discussions across Asia.

Founded in 1996, the SCO has expanded considerably over the years and now includes major countries such as China, India, Russia and Iran. The grouping represents around 43 percent of the world’s population and approximately 23 percent of the global economy, giving its collective statements considerable geopolitical weight.

The Bishkek summit also highlighted calls for closer cooperation among member states on trade, connectivity, energy and security. Leaders reiterated the importance of maintaining regional stability while opposing actions they believe undermine sovereignty and international norms.

The SCO’s criticism of attacks and sanctions against Iran underlined the organisation’s broader push for a multipolar international order and greater influence for emerging powers in global affairs.
