Nila Vikhe Patil, a politician with family roots in Maharashtra, has been elected to Sweden’s 349-member Riksdag from the Stockholm City constituency. A Green Party representative, she entered the Swedish Parliament following the September 13 general election. Sweden’s Election Authority formally confirmed the final parliamentary results on September 19.
Born in Sweden, Nila spent part of her childhood in Ahmednagar before returning to Sweden for higher education and a political career. She is the daughter of educationist Ashok Vikhe Patil, granddaughter of former Union minister Balasaheb Vikhe Patil and niece of Maharashtra minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil.
Nila’s political career in Sweden has included work as a political adviser in the Prime Minister’s Office, where she handled areas including finance, taxation and housing. She has also been involved in local political work in Stockholm.
Her election comes as Sweden’s Green Party secured 22 seats in the new Riksdag. The Social Democrats won 99 seats, while the Left Party secured 30 and the Centre Party 25. The Riksdag has 349 seats in total.
Nila has spoken about wanting to contribute to Stockholm and Sweden through her parliamentary role. Her stated political priorities include sustainability, biodiversity, climate-related challenges and ensuring opportunities for children to build secure futures.
Her election has also drawn attention in Maharashtra because of her connection to the Vikhe Patil family. Nila has previously spoken about her close relationship with her grandfather Balasaheb and his influence on her interest in public affairs.
