New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared that India is prepared to take a leading role in advancing the interests of the Global South, while calling for major reforms within the BRICS grouping. His remarks came on the second day of the BRICS Summit, where he welcomed world leaders and outlined his vision for a more inclusive international order.
Addressing the gathering, Modi stressed that developing nations must move beyond merely following rules established by powerful countries. Instead, they should become active participants in shaping global policies and decisions. His message placed India at the centre of efforts to strengthen cooperation among countries of the Global South.
The Prime Minister highlighted the imbalance between the Global South’s exposure to international crises and its limited influence over global decision-making. According to Modi, countries in the southern regions of the world frequently face the consequences of economic instability, geopolitical tensions and other global challenges, despite having insufficient representation in major decision-making forums.
He argued that the existing hierarchical system, which benefits a select group of powerful nations, must be dismantled and replaced with a partnership-based framework. In this proposed model, no country would impose rules on others. Instead, all participating nations would contribute to creating common rules through dialogue, equality and cooperation.
Modi’s comments also pointed towards a possible roadmap for BRICS reform, reflecting India’s broader ambition to strengthen the voice of emerging economies. His vision seeks to transform the grouping into a platform that promotes shared prosperity, equitable representation and collective action.
As global power dynamics continue to evolve, India’s proposed leadership raises a crucial question: Can BRICS become the foundation of a fairer world order driven by partnership rather than dominance?
