Guterres Defends UN Strength, Praises India’s Mediation Efforts Amid Global Crises

UN Secretary-General António Guterres defends the resilience of the United Nations, praises India’s Russia-Ukraine mediation efforts and addresses the map controversy during his BRICS Summit visit to Delhi.

A World Body Under Pressure

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has acknowledged the paralysis within the Security Council while insisting that the broader United Nations system remains resilient. Speaking during his visit to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit, Guterres addressed mounting concerns over the effectiveness of international institutions amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

The Secretary-General’s remarks come at a time when divisions among the five permanent members of the Security Council have increasingly complicated efforts to respond to global conflicts. Despite these obstacles, Guterres maintained that the UN’s wider humanitarian, development and peacebuilding missions continue to play a vital role across the world.

During his Delhi engagements, Guterres also commended India’s diplomatic efforts to facilitate dialogue between Russia and Ukraine. New Delhi has repeatedly advocated communication, negotiation and peaceful resolution as essential tools for addressing the conflict. The UN chief’s recognition highlights India’s growing importance in international mediation and its expanding influence within the Global South.

India’s diplomatic position has sought to maintain engagement with all major stakeholders while emphasising the need for a negotiated settlement. Guterres’s appreciation of these efforts reflects the broader international interest in initiatives that could help reduce tensions and create opportunities for dialogue.

The UN Secretary-General also clarified the controversy surrounding a map, addressing concerns linked to its representation and interpretation. His visit to India underlined the importance of cooperation between New Delhi and the United Nations at a time when global institutions face increasing demands for reform, accountability and greater representation.
