Political tensions in Kosovo took an unusual turn when an opposition lawmaker threw eggs at acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti inside the country’s parliament. The incident forced the parliamentary session to be suspended and briefly disrupted the live broadcast.
Kosovo has experienced significant political instability in recent years, with three elections held in less than two years. Political disagreements and divisions between parties have repeatedly created difficulties in forming stable institutions.
The latest confrontation reportedly occurred during discussions over the election of a new president. Kurti was holding talks with opposition parties when disagreements emerged over an attempt to postpone an important election-related process.
Opposition politician Time Kadrijaj, seated in the front row, reportedly began throwing eggs towards Kurti while shouting “Shame on you.” Parliamentary officials quickly intervened and escorted the acting prime minister away from the area.
The incident was not shown for long on the parliamentary live broadcast, which was reportedly stopped soon afterwards. Despite being targeted by the eggs, Kurti appeared unfazed. He said that if participating in discussions meant becoming the target of such attacks, he was prepared to face them.
The confrontation highlights the deep political divisions that continue to affect Kosovo’s political system. Kurti is also familiar with disruptive scenes inside parliament. When his party was in opposition, its lawmakers had previously used tear gas inside the chamber to protest certain parliamentary votes.
The latest incident has once again drawn attention to the increasingly heated political atmosphere in the small European country, where disagreements between rival parties continue to create uncertainty over the functioning of parliament and government.
