China has unveiled an advanced robotic fish that could play a significant role in underwater surveillance and maritime defence. Named the “BG-5 Golden Dragon Fish,” the remotely controlled underwater drone was recently displayed at an event in Beijing, attracting attention for its unusual design and potential military applications.
Developed by Chinese company Boagangdao Marine Technology Group, the robotic fish reportedly imitates the movements of the golden arowana. Unlike conventional underwater drones, it does not use a propeller. Instead, a flexible, fish-like tail pushes water backwards, allowing the machine to move forward naturally.
The robot can reportedly operate at a depth of five metres and swim at a speed of 0.6 metres per second. Its advanced sensors can detect obstacles, change direction automatically and navigate around underwater objects. Developers have also introduced an improved version equipped with multi-robot cooperation technology.
This system allows several robotic fish to operate together, divide tasks and exchange signals while monitoring large underwater areas. Their small size and fish-like appearance could help them remain difficult to detect. They may also move through narrow coral formations and other challenging underwater environments.
Experts believe the technology could be used for surveillance, reconnaissance and naval intelligence. Its ability to avoid conventional radar detection could make it valuable for covert maritime operations.
Boagangdao has previously worked with China’s defence sector to develop military technologies, including a robotic shark reportedly capable of attacking targets. The latest development highlights Beijing’s continuing efforts to expand underwater capabilities and strengthen its strategic position in contested maritime regions.
