Seventeen-year-old Janmoni Konwar from Assam’s Jorhat has emerged as an inspiring national-level karate champion after overcoming devastating floods, financial difficulties and disrupted training.
Janmoni won the gold medal at the 20th All India Independence Cup Karate Championship held at Delhi’s Talkatora Indoor Stadium. She remained unbeaten throughout the competition, winning all three bouts. In the final, she delivered a dominant performance and defeated her opponent 10-2 to claim the title.
Her achievement becomes even more remarkable considering the circumstances she faced before the tournament. Floodwaters reportedly submerged her family home and damaged the place where she trained. The practice ground remained underwater for nearly a month, forcing Janmoni and her family to take shelter in a relief camp.
Despite these setbacks, the young karateka continued training whenever possible and remained focused on her dream of representing India at the Olympics. However, financial difficulties nearly prevented her from travelling to Delhi for the national competition.
Janmoni eventually received financial assistance from Indian educator and entrepreneur Alakh Pandey, founder and CEO of Physics Wallah, after he learned about her struggle. He also helped arrange her air ticket to Delhi, allowing her to participate in the championship.
Janmoni’s victory has now brought renewed attention to her sporting journey and the challenges faced by flood-affected families in Assam. Her next major ambition is to represent India at the Olympic Games.
Her success also comes amid continuing concerns over Assam’s recurring floods and the need for stronger long-term solutions to the state’s flood crisis.
