Indian weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu has set her sights on one remaining milestone after completing a remarkable hat-trick of Commonwealth Games gold medals. Fresh from her latest triumph in Glasgow, the Olympic silver medallist says her full focus has now shifted to winning her first-ever medal at the Asian Games.
Competing in the women's 48kg category, Chanu secured her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold, adding to an already glittering international career. She had earlier won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, making her one of the most successful weightlifters in the event's history.
Despite her achievements at the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and other international competitions, the Asian Games remains the only major tournament where she is yet to reach the podium. Chanu revealed that she resumed training for the Asian Games immediately after her Commonwealth victory, describing the upcoming event as her biggest priority.
The 32-year-old weightlifter admitted that injuries have repeatedly disrupted her Asian Games campaigns in the past. Whether before the competition or during the event itself, fitness setbacks have prevented her from achieving the medal she has long desired. Determined not to let history repeat itself, Chanu believes this edition presents her best opportunity.
Reflecting on her future, she acknowledged that she is uncertain how much longer she will continue competing at the highest level due to recurring injuries. However, she remains motivated to seize the moment while she is in strong form.
With an Olympic silver, World Championship gold, multiple Commonwealth titles, and numerous international medals already in her collection, Mirabai Chanu is now chasing the one achievement still missing from her extraordinary career—an Asian Games medal.
