Congress Calls Lok Sabha Delay ‘Abnormal’ After Sine Die Adjournment

Congress questions the delay in formally proroguing the Lok Sabha, calling the 10-day gap after sine die adjournment unusual and seeking clarity from the government.

The Congress has questioned the Centre over the Lok Sabha not being formally prorogued even 10 days after the House was adjourned sine die, calling the situation “abnormal” and raising questions over parliamentary procedure.

The latest criticism comes after the conclusion of the Monsoon Session, when the Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die. While sine die means that the House has been adjourned without announcing a specific date for its next sitting, formal prorogation is a separate constitutional step carried out by the President.

Congress leaders argued that the delay in proroguing the Lower House was unusual and sought clarity from the government on the reasons behind it. The party indicated that such a delay could have implications for parliamentary functioning and the handling of pending legislative business.

Under parliamentary practice, the President prorogues both Houses on the advice of the Union Cabinet. Prorogation formally brings a session to an end, while an adjournment merely suspends the proceedings of the House.

The Congress has therefore sought an explanation from the government, making the issue another point of contention between the Opposition and the ruling establishment.

The development comes amid continued political debate over parliamentary functioning, legislative procedures and the government’s handling of important national issues. The Opposition is expected to keep pressing the government for answers on why the Lok Sabha has not yet been prorogued.
