Government Restricts Two-Drug Combination Medicines For Young Children

Government Restricts Two-Drug Combination Medicines For Young Children

The government has expanded restrictions on fixed-dose formulations containing Chlorpheniramine Maleate and Phenylephrine Hydrochloride for young children, citing the need for greater medicine safety.

The government has tightened restrictions on the use of fixed-dose combination medicines containing two commonly used chemical compounds in young children, citing concerns over their use in this age group.

The latest notification extends the restriction to all formulations containing Chlorpheniramine Maleate and Phenylephrine Hydrochloride. These medicines are commonly used in preparations intended to provide relief from symptoms associated with colds, coughs, nasal congestion and allergies.

A fixed-dose combination contains two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients in a single formulation. While such combinations can offer convenience and therapeutic benefits in certain circumstances, their use in young children requires particular caution because of differences in metabolism, dosage requirements and the potential for adverse effects.

The government’s latest move is aimed at preventing inappropriate use of these formulations among young children and ensuring that medicines prescribed for them meet appropriate safety requirements.

Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antihistamine, while Phenylephrine Hydrochloride is a decongestant. Both ingredients have been used widely in cold and allergy medicines, including combination products. However, health authorities have increasingly stressed the need for careful evaluation of cough and cold medicines intended for children.

The notification broadens the scope of the earlier requirement by covering all formulations containing the specified combination, bringing greater uniformity to the regulatory framework.

Parents and caregivers are advised not to administer cough, cold or allergy medicines to young children without appropriate medical advice. Healthcare professionals are also expected to consider age-appropriate alternatives and dosages when treating children.

The latest restriction reflects the government’s continued focus on improving medicine safety and protecting vulnerable paediatric patients from potentially inappropriate drug combinations.
