India’s central drug regulator has issued a nationwide warning against two skin-whitening creams after tests detected harmful heavy metals above permitted limits. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has identified Gori Beauty Cream and Chandni Whitening Cream as unauthorised cosmetics and advised consumers not to purchase or use them.
According to the CDSCO alert issued on September 8, both products were manufactured in Pakistan. The regulator stated that the creams contained excessive levels of harmful heavy metals. However, the specific metals detected and their exact quantities have not yet been disclosed.
The products also lack the mandatory import registration required for cosmetics manufactured abroad and sold in India. Under the Cosmetics Rules, 2020, imported cosmetic products must obtain the necessary registration before being marketed in the country. A product’s branding or claims of skin-lightening benefits do not establish its legal approval.
The regulator has directed drug controllers across states and Union Territories, along with its zonal, sub-zonal and port authorities, to take appropriate action to stop the sale and advertising of the two creams.
Heavy metals are a concern because repeated or prolonged exposure can cause serious health problems. Mercury, for instance, may damage the kidneys and nervous system. Consumers who have purchased either product have been advised to discontinue use immediately.
While buying cosmetics, customers should check the manufacturer’s details, batch number, manufacturing date, expiry date and import registration information. Anyone experiencing irritation, swelling, unusual skin discolouration or other symptoms should consult a dermatologist and inform the doctor about the product used.
