The West Bengal government has announced the formation of a dedicated task force to oversee the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the state. The move follows assurances made by the government after the recent change in administration to work towards introducing the national education framework.
The state government has backed the vision of NEP 2020, which seeks to create a more flexible, research-oriented and interdisciplinary education system. The policy aims to encourage greater academic freedom, wider learning opportunities and stronger links between education, research and industry.
Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay announced the formation of the task force on Thursday. Professor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, former chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and head of the review committee on the National Education Policy 2020, has been appointed as an adviser to the panel.
The task force will comprise 21 members drawn from diverse sectors. Representatives from academia and the education sector, industry and commerce, as well as senior government officials, will be part of the panel.
The government is expected to use the task force to examine the practical aspects of implementing NEP 2020 across higher education institutions in West Bengal. The panel is also likely to focus on developing an education ecosystem that promotes interdisciplinary learning, research and collaboration between educational institutions and industry.
The formation of the task force marks a significant step towards aligning the state's higher education system with the objectives of the national policy.
