A black-flag motorcycle rally organised by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Shillong turned violent on Wednesday, with several vehicles damaged, alleged assaults reported and a government vehicle reportedly set on fire. Statues of Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose were also allegedly vandalised during the unrest.
The KSU, a prominent student organisation in Meghalaya’s Khasi Hills region, had organised the rally as part of its ongoing agitation over a five-point charter of demands. The demands reportedly focus on recruitment, protection of indigenous residents, migration-related concerns and environmental issues.
Tensions were reported from several parts of Shillong, including Polo, Barik and Mawlai, as protesters moved through the city. A police escort vehicle suffered damage, while a National Informatics Centre vehicle at Barik reportedly had its rear windshield smashed. Other vehicles, including a pickup truck and a Telecom Department vehicle, were also reportedly damaged.
The situation escalated at the Food Corporation of India office in Mawlai, where a government vehicle was allegedly set ablaze. At RR Colony, the glass enclosure around a Swami Vivekananda statue installed in 2025 was reportedly damaged. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s statue was also allegedly vandalised.
The rally followed the KSU’s warning that its agitation would intensify if the state government failed to respond to its demands. The administration had permitted Wednesday’s programme while imposing conditions and increasing security in sensitive areas.
The KSU had earlier organised demonstrations and public meetings on August 17 and 18 and reportedly gave the government 15 days to respond to its charter.
