While the month began with a price hike of ₹31 for commercial gas cylinders on March 1, domestic cylinders (14.2 kg) remained untouched at that time. However, that relief lasted only five days. In a sudden move, authorities have now increased the rates for both domestic and commercial gas. The timing of the hike has caught many off guard. Usually, price revisions occur on the first of every month. The decision to hike domestic rates just five days after the initial commercial revision marks a "double whammy" for consumers.

It's not just the kitchen that is feeling the heat. Commercial gas cylinders (19 kg), used primarily by restaurants, hotels, and small eateries, have also seen a second consecutive hike. Within five days, the cumulative increase has pushed commercial rates up by over ₹115, bringing the cost of a 19 kg cylinder in cities like Kolkata to nearly ₹1,990.
Market experts suggest that fluctuations in international fuel prices and the exchange rate of the Rupee against the Dollar are the primary drivers behind this update. Nevertheless, common households are expressing frustration as the cost of living continues to climb.
