The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has taken a significant step towards combating cervical cancer by developing an experimental drug that could prevent the disease from progressing in its early stages. The medicine, named SHETA2, has been developed through a collaborative research programme between ICMR's National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research and the Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma.
Cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in India, with nearly 150,000 new cases reported every year. While HPV vaccination has become an important preventive measure, many women remain unvaccinated or are diagnosed after developing precancerous changes, leaving surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy as the primary treatment options.
Researchers say SHETA2 is designed to target abnormal cervical cells infected with high-risk strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), the virus responsible for the vast majority of cervical cancer cases. The drug aims to stop uncontrolled cell growth before it develops into invasive cancer, particularly during the precancerous stage known as Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN).
If successful, the treatment could reduce the need for major surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, all of which can have significant physical and emotional side effects. Scientists believe an effective drug could offer patients a less invasive treatment option while preserving healthy tissue.
The medicine is currently undergoing clinical trials in India. Researchers emphasise that its safety, effectiveness, appropriate dosage, and potential side effects must be thoroughly evaluated before regulatory approval. If the trials prove successful, SHETA2 could become a major advancement in cervical cancer prevention and early treatment.
