Pizza, burgers, rolls, chips, cookies and desserts are popular comfort foods, but frequent consumption of highly processed foods can contribute to an unhealthy diet. Instead of completely giving up favourite treats, nutrition-conscious eaters can prepare simpler homemade alternatives using fresh ingredients.
For pizza cravings, a thin base made with whole-wheat flour or oats can be topped with tomatoes, bell peppers, mushrooms, paneer and a moderate amount of cheese. Vegetables, chicken or egg can also be added to increase the protein content.
Ice cream can be replaced with a bowl of homemade yoghurt mixed with fresh fruit and nuts. Adding dates, raisins, walnuts or almonds can provide natural sweetness and texture while keeping the preparation simple.
Store-bought sauces can also be replaced with homemade versions. A quick tomato sauce can be prepared by cooking fresh tomatoes with garlic and black pepper. Similarly, yoghurt blended with coriander and garlic can serve as an alternative to mayonnaise-based dips.
For those who enjoy packaged chips and crunchy snacks, roasted makhana and nuts prepared with a small amount of ghee or olive oil can be a convenient option. Light seasoning with spices can make them more appealing.
Packaged cookies, doughnuts and pastries can also be replaced with homemade oat or ragi cookies. A simple mixture of oats, baking soda, butter, honey, salt and dry fruits can be shaped into small portions and baked at 175 degrees Celsius for around 10–12 minutes.
The key is moderation, fresh ingredients and balanced portions rather than completely eliminating favourite foods.
