Frequent Empty Stomach Acid Pills May Silently Weaken Bones Warn Doctors Nationwide

Orthopaedic experts have cautioned that prolonged use of acid-reducing medicines on an empty stomach may interfere with calcium absorption, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Doctors also stressed the importance of vitamin D, proper posture, and responsible medication use to protect bone health.

Orthopaedic specialists have warned that the long-term and unnecessary use of acid-suppressing medications on an empty stomach may increase the risk of weakened bones and osteoporosis. The warning comes during Bone and Joint Awareness Week, being observed nationwide by the Indian Orthopaedic Association, while the West Bengal Orthopaedic Association is conducting awareness programs across the state from August 3 to August 8.

Speaking at a press conference, senior orthopaedic experts, including Dr. Kiran Kumar Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Sabyasachi Santra, Dr. Utpal Bandyopadhyay, Dr. Sunit Hazra, and Dr. Arnab Karmakar, highlighted the importance of responsible medication use for maintaining bone health.

According to Dr. Kiran Kumar Mukhopadhyay, Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)—such as omeprazole, pantoprazole, and rabeprazole—reduce stomach acid, which is essential for absorbing calcium from foods like milk, yogurt, sesame seeds, and small fish. Poor calcium absorption over time can contribute to osteoporosis, a condition that makes bones fragile and more prone to fractures.

Doctors also expressed concern over the increasing incidence of osteoporosis among children. Dr. Utpal Bandyopadhyay noted that a growing number of adolescents are showing signs of reduced bone density, emphasizing the need for early preventive measures.

As part of the awareness campaign, schools will conduct posture training sessions, spinal health screenings, and educational programs promoting healthy habits. Workplace initiatives will also focus on correct sitting posture to reduce musculoskeletal problems.

Experts further advised children to spend time outdoors, preferably between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., to help the body produce vitamin D naturally. Adequate vitamin D improves calcium absorption, while excessive screen time indoors may contribute to deficiency and poor bone health.
