Flipkart is set to enter India's highly competitive food delivery market, marking a significant expansion of its digital commerce ecosystem. The e-commerce giant plans to launch its food delivery service in phases, taking on established players such as Swiggy and Zomato.
According to the company, the rollout will begin in a limited number of cities over the coming weeks. This phased launch is intended to help Flipkart evaluate customer response, optimize operations, and fine-tune the service before expanding it across the country. Company CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy has indicated that the new offering is expected to go live within the next few weeks.
Customers will not need to download a separate application to access the service. While Flipkart is expected to introduce a dedicated food delivery platform, users will also be able to place food orders directly through the existing Flipkart app, making the experience more convenient for its large customer base.
The move builds on the success of Flipkart Minutes, the company's quick-commerce platform that promises rapid delivery of daily essentials in selected locations. By integrating food delivery into its ecosystem, Flipkart aims to strengthen customer engagement and diversify its services beyond traditional online retail.
India's online food delivery market has witnessed rapid growth over the past few years, driven by changing consumer habits and increasing demand for doorstep convenience. Flipkart's entry is expected to intensify competition, potentially leading to improved services, attractive offers, and greater choices for consumers. Industry observers believe the expansion could reshape the food delivery landscape as major platforms compete for market share in one of India's fastest-growing digital sectors.
