The West Bengal government has sought the opinions of leading industry bodies on the proposed "One Nation, One Election" initiative, marking an unexpected move amid the ongoing national debate over simultaneous elections. The proposal, introduced by the central government, has been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) following opposition from several political parties.
According to official sources, the state's Department of Industry, Infrastructure and Plantation Affairs has written to six prominent business chambers, requesting their assessment of the potential economic impact of the proposal. The letters, sent on June 30 by the department's Special Commissioner, were addressed to the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Merchants' Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Bharat Chamber of Commerce.
The government has specifically asked these organizations to evaluate how conducting all major elections—including Lok Sabha, Assembly, Municipal and Panchayat polls—either simultaneously or under the current staggered system could affect West Bengal's economic growth, industrial activity and workforce.
Officials are seeking both the direct and indirect implications of the proposed electoral reform, including its possible influence on investment, business continuity, administrative efficiency and employment.
The move is considered significant because the issue has largely remained a political debate at the national level. By consulting major industry associations, the West Bengal government appears keen to understand the economic consequences before taking a broader policy position.
