UP Governor Urges Students Prioritize Motherhood Before Career, Sparks Online Debate Nationwide

UP Governor Urges Students Prioritize Motherhood Before Career, Sparks Online Debate Nationwide

A fresh debate has erupted after Uttar Pradesh Governor and former Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel advised female students to prioritize becoming "ideal mothers" before pursuing professional success. Speaking at the convocation ceremony of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University on Thursday, Patel emphasized that personal values and family responsibilities should remain central, regardless of career achievements.

Addressing the graduating students, she remarked that whether a woman becomes a teacher, an IAS officer, or enters any other profession, learning to become a responsible mother is equally important. She also stressed that everyone should know basic life skills such as cooking and serving food, describing them as essential aspects of family life.

Patel further urged parents to remain actively involved in their daughters' lives during their college years. According to her, close parental guidance can help prevent mistakes that may negatively affect a student's future. She also expressed concern over the increasing number of domestic violence cases and crimes against women, arguing that education should focus not only on academic excellence but also on building strong moral values and responsible citizens.

The Governor said that professional ambitions should never come at the cost of neglecting family responsibilities. She called upon educational institutions to nurture social values alongside academic learning, warning that rising educational qualifications without corresponding ethical development reflect shortcomings in the education system.

Her remarks quickly triggered mixed reactions on social media. Critics accused Patel of promoting outdated gender stereotypes by placing domestic responsibilities above women's professional aspirations. Others, however, defended her comments, arguing that she was highlighting the importance of family values and character-building rather than discouraging women from pursuing successful careers. The remarks continue to fuel widespread public discussion.
