Shamik Demands Tough Action Against Separatist Slogans, Triggers Political Row Nationwide

Political tensions have escalated in West Bengal after BJP leader Shamik Bhattacharya called for tough action against people allegedly raising separatist slogans during protests in Kolkata. His remarks sparked strong criticism from Trinamool Congress, with Kunal Ghosh insisting that anti-national activities should be dealt with strictly through legal and judicial processes, not through violence. The controversy has reignited debate over law enforcement, democracy and national security.

A fresh political controversy has erupted in West Bengal after BJP state president Shamik Bhattacharya called for stringent action against individuals allegedly raising separatist slogans during recent protests in Kolkata. Speaking at a Kargil Vijay Diwas tribute programme, Bhattacharya alleged that anti-national elements were attempting to regain relevance by using slogans supporting Kashmir's separation and India's division.

Referring to demonstrations held in Kolkata, he claimed that police personnel and journalists were attacked during the unrest. He urged law enforcement agencies to deal firmly with anyone raising slogans advocating separatism, arguing that such acts should not be tolerated in a democratic nation. Bhattacharya also linked the issue to what he described as growing radicalisation in West Bengal and called for stronger measures to protect national unity.

His remarks immediately drew criticism from political opponents. Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh said that while anyone making anti-national statements should face strict legal consequences, public representatives should never encourage violence or excessive use of force. He described such remarks as inconsistent with democratic values and stressed that the police and courts should handle such cases strictly within the framework of law.

The controversy follows clashes during a recent student and youth protest in central Kolkata, where violence reportedly broke out, leading to injuries, property damage and multiple arrests. Police have continued identifying suspects through video footage and have initiated legal proceedings under recently introduced anti-goonda legislation.

The exchange has intensified the political debate over law and order, freedom of expression and national security in West Bengal, with both the ruling party and the opposition defending sharply contrasting approaches to dealing with alleged anti-national activities.
