Pawan Replaces Tajinderpal As India’s Flag-Bearer After Ceremonial Kit Mix-Up

Pawan Replaces Tajinderpal As India’s Flag-Bearer After Ceremonial Kit Mix-Up

A ceremonial kit issue led India to replace Tajinderpal Singh Toor with Pawan Singh as the country’s flag-bearer at the 2026 Asian Games opening ceremony.

India’s preparations for the 2026 Asian Games opening ceremony were disrupted by a last-minute change involving the country’s flag-bearer after an issue with the ceremonial kit. Pawan Singh was named to carry the Indian flag in place of shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor.

The change came as India prepared for the opening ceremony, where athletes and officials from participating nations gathered to mark the formal beginning of the continental sporting event. Tajinderpal had originally been designated as one of India’s flag-bearers for the ceremony.

However, a problem involving the ceremonial kit resulted in the responsibility being handed to Pawan. The episode added an unexpected complication to India’s participation in the opening proceedings, although the change did not affect the country’s wider participation in the Games.

Tajinderpal is among India’s prominent track-and-field athletes and has represented the country at major international competitions. His selection as flag-bearer had reflected his standing within the Indian contingent and his achievements in athletics.

Pawan’s replacement ensured that India was represented by a designated athlete during the ceremony despite the last-minute logistical issue. The flag-bearing responsibility remains a significant ceremonial role, traditionally marking a country’s presence at the opening of the Games.

The 2026 Asian Games bring together athletes from across Asia for competition in multiple sporting disciplines. India’s contingent is participating across a wide range of events, with athletes aiming to compete for medals throughout the Games.

The ceremonial kit mix-up remained a notable early incident surrounding India’s opening-ceremony preparations, while attention now turns to the sporting competitions and the performances of the Indian contingent in the days ahead.
