Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has reiterated his call for dignity and social acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals, stating that they are an integral part of society and deserve equal respect. Speaking at an event in Hyderabad on Sunday, Bhagwat said the existence of LGBTQ+ people has long been acknowledged in Indian civilisation and within the traditions of Sanatan Dharma.
Responding to a question about the LGBTQ+ community, Bhagwat remarked that people with diverse gender identities and sexual orientations have always existed. He said some individuals are naturally born this way, while others may experience different psychological or personal journeys. According to him, Indian traditions have historically recognised their presence rather than denying it.
Bhagwat stressed that LGBTQ+ individuals are human beings with the same right to live with dignity as everyone else. He argued that they should never be isolated or excluded from society and that social harmony requires acknowledging and respecting every individual. He also referred to historical and religious traditions, noting that certain communities associated with diverse gender identities have their own religious practices, temples, and spiritual leaders, including participation in events such as the Kumbh Mela.
The RSS chief said discussions surrounding the community should focus on understanding and practical solutions rather than unnecessary controversy. He added that India's cultural heritage has generally adopted a humane approach toward such communities.
Bhagwat has expressed similar views before. In 2023, he cited examples from Hindu scriptures and traditions to argue that LGBTQ+ individuals have historically been accepted as part of society. While the RSS welcomed the Supreme Court's 2018 verdict decriminalising consensual same-sex relationships, it has maintained a cautious stance on legal recognition of same-sex marriage.
