Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing an end to a memorable 13-year journey in the longest format. The 36-year-old made the announcement on November 6, 2026, through an emotional message on Instagram.
The date holds special meaning for Shami. He made his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 6, 2013. Exactly 13 years later, he chose the same date to say goodbye to the white jersey.
Shami represented India in 64 Test matches and claimed 229 wickets in 122 innings at an average of 27.71 and an economy rate of 3.30. His best bowling figures were 6 for 56. He also took six five-wicket hauls during his Test career.
His final Test appearance came in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in England. Despite injuries and breaks during his career, Shami remained one of India's most effective fast bowlers, known for his pace, swing and ability to take wickets with both the new and old ball.
However, this is not the end of his cricketing career. Shami has made it clear that he intends to continue playing white-ball cricket, including domestic competitions and the IPL. He has also indicated that he may play four-day domestic matches if he remains fit.
In his farewell message, Shami thanked his teammates, coaches, family, fans, the BCCI and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for supporting him throughout his journey.
For Bengal cricket supporters, his next appearances in domestic cricket will remain important to watch.
