Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to hold bilateral talks in New Delhi on Friday, September 11, ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit. The meeting is expected to focus on defence cooperation, nuclear energy, trade and the impact of US sanctions on India-Russia economic ties.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has confirmed the planned meeting, saying the two leaders are likely to discuss several areas of strategic cooperation. The possible acquisition and joint production of Russia’s fifth-generation Su-57 fighter aircraft is expected to receive particular attention.
Russia has previously offered India deeper cooperation on the Su-57, including possible technology transfer and local production. The proposal could appeal to New Delhi’s emphasis on domestic defence manufacturing and technology access. India and Russia already have extensive experience in jointly producing military platforms and weapons.
Nuclear energy is another major area expected to figure in the discussions. The two countries are exploring expanded cooperation, including the possibility of additional Russian-built nuclear power plants in India. Trade and financial cooperation are also likely to feature, particularly as both sides seek mechanisms to manage transactions amid Western sanctions.
The leaders could also exchange views on the Ukraine conflict and broader geopolitical developments. India has repeatedly advocated dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the war, while Moscow has welcomed New Delhi’s position.
The Modi-Putin meeting comes shortly after their August 31 interaction on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Bishkek. Their discussions then covered defence, energy, trade and other areas of the bilateral partnership.
With India hosting BRICS from September 11 to 13, the meeting is expected to underline the continuing strategic importance of the India-Russia relationship amid shifting global alliances.
