Lionel Messi continued his remarkable Major League Soccer campaign with another spectacular goal, scoring directly from a difficult angle as Inter Miami faced Columbus Crew. Despite Messi’s individual brilliance, Miami suffered a 2-1 defeat, leaving their hopes of finishing atop the Eastern Conference increasingly difficult.
Columbus took the lead in the 28th minute, but Miami were awarded a free kick five minutes later. Positioned close to the corner flag, Messi chose an unconventional option. Rather than delivering the ball into the crowded penalty area, the Argentine curled his free kick directly toward the far post.
Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte struggled to judge the ball’s trajectory, allowing it to travel beyond him and into the net. The goal brought Miami level and once again highlighted Messi’s ability to create scoring opportunities from situations that typically invite a cross rather than a direct attempt.
Messi later appeared to score again in the second half, but Schulte managed to keep the effort out. Columbus eventually regained the advantage after a defensive error by Miami, securing a 2-1 victory.
The defeat leaves Inter Miami 14 points behind Nashville in the Eastern Conference standings, with seven matches remaining. Their position makes the race for the conference title increasingly challenging.
For Messi, however, the individual numbers remain striking. The free kick was his 21st MLS goal of the season, keeping him at the top of the league’s scoring chart. At 39, and following his retirement from international football, Messi continues to produce decisive moments for his club.
