A massive landslide in West Sikkim has completely blocked the Rimbi-Yuksom main road, disrupting a crucial route used by both local residents and tourists. A large section of the hillside collapsed near Rimbi village, sending mud, rocks and debris onto the road and leaving the area covered in a thick flow of sludge.
The road connects Rimbi with Yuksom and Khecheopalri and is an important route for local communities and visitors. With vehicular movement suspended, tourists are facing difficulties, while residents living near the damaged slope remain concerned about their safety. Several houses in and around the foothills have reportedly come under risk.
The situation has become more worrying because heavy rain continues in the region. Residents fear that further rainfall could trigger additional landslides, as the damaged hillside has yet to be declared stable. Locals have urged authorities to conduct an expert assessment and introduce permanent slope-protection measures rather than simply clearing debris and reopening the road.
The latest incident comes amid a series of weather-related concerns in Sikkim. Earlier, a landslide near Chakkung Chu blocked the Teesta River, raising fears of a possible flash flood. The river flow has since been restored, but authorities continue monitoring the vulnerable terrain.
A team led by Chungthang Sub-Divisional Magistrate Arun Chhetri recently inspected the affected area to assess slope stability and possible risks to the Tung-Partem road project. Officials from GREF and the Revenue Department also participated in the inspection.
