The opposition INDIA bloc is set to hold a major rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, November 1, to protest alleged irregularities in voter lists and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The rally, organised under the banner “Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao”, is scheduled between 10 am and 5 pm. A march from the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction to Ramlila Maidan is planned for noon. Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Commission’s stated purpose of the exercise is to revise and verify voter lists.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge are expected to attend. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee are also expected to join the protest. Their participation could bring the Bengal voter-list issue into sharper focus on the national stage.
The rally is expected to bring together leaders and workers from several opposition parties, along with student groups and civil society representatives. The alliance has also invited citizens to join its campaign.
The BJP has rejected the opposition’s allegations, defending the voter-list revision process and accusing the INDIA bloc of politicising the issue.
The event will also test the unity of the opposition alliance. Which leaders attend, who share the stage and what they say about electoral reforms will be closely watched. The opposition’s claims and the Election Commission’s response remain central to the debate.
