Speculation is growing over a possible reshuffle of governors in several Indian states, alongside discussions about changes in the Union Council of Ministers. Uttar Pradesh is emerging as one of the key states where a change could be considered ahead of next year’s Assembly election.
Anandiben Patel has served as Uttar Pradesh governor since July 2019, making her one of the longest-serving governors in the state’s history. The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly’s official records show that she has remained in office since July 29, 2019.
With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh election approaching, speculation has intensified over whether the Centre could appoint a new governor to the politically crucial state. However, no official announcement has been made so far, and the reported changes remain part of political discussions.
The possibility of changes in opposition-ruled Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has also attracted attention. Tamil Nadu currently has Rajendra Arlekar handling the governor’s functions after the Centre’s March 2026 reshuffle, when R.N. Ravi was appointed West Bengal governor and Arlekar was assigned Tamil Nadu.
The reported reshuffle comes against the backdrop of several major Assembly elections scheduled for 2027, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab, Manipur, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Political sources have linked the broader government reshuffle discussions to these upcoming electoral battles.
Any decision on gubernatorial appointments would be closely watched because governors play an important constitutional role, particularly in states where political equations are closely contested. For now, the Centre has not confirmed any fresh appointments.
