Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a 14-year career with the national team. The 38-year-old confirmed his decision in an interview on the Final Word cricket podcast, released on November 3.
Maxwell represented Australia in 149 One-Day Internationals, 130 Twenty20 Internationals and seven Test matches. He had already retired from ODI cricket in June 2025 but continued playing T20 internationals. His final appearance for Australia came against Oman in the 2026 T20 World Cup in February.
Known as the ‘Big Show’ for his aggressive batting and unusual shots, Maxwell was an important part of Australia’s success in limited-overs cricket. He was a member of the teams that won the ODI World Cups in 2015 and 2023, as well as the T20 World Cup in 2021.
One of the biggest moments of his career came at the 2023 ODI World Cup against Afghanistan. Maxwell scored an unbeaten 201 from 128 balls, helping Australia recover from 91 for seven to chase down a target of 292.
He finished with 3,990 runs in ODIs and 2,897 in T20 internationals. He also took 136 international wickets across the three formats.
Maxwell said he wanted to focus on keeping his body fit for the remaining tournaments in his career. Along with international cricket, he is stepping away from Victoria’s 50-over and four-day domestic competitions. However, he is expected to continue playing franchise T20 cricket, including the Big Bash League for Melbourne Stars.
His retirement closes the international chapter of a career remembered for explosive batting, match-winning performances and three major World Cup titles.
