Election Commission Mandates Parent SIR Details For New Voter Registration Applications

Election Commission Mandates Parent SIR Details For New Voter Registration Applications

The Election Commission has introduced a new requirement for individuals applying for voter registration through the online Form-6 portal, making it mandatory to provide details linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Under the updated system, applicants must furnish information about their own or their parents' or grandparents' presence in the SIR electoral records before their application can be submitted.

The revised online process has been implemented through the ECINet portal and applies to first-time voters, newly eligible citizens who have attained the age of 18, and individuals seeking fresh enrolment after their names were removed from the electoral roll. While the Commission has not formally amended the text of Form-6 through a separate notification, the additional information has been made compulsory for online applicants.

Applicants must indicate whether their own names appeared in the SIR voter list or whether their parents or grandparents were included. If either option is selected, they must also provide the relevant Assembly constituency, polling booth number, and electoral roll serial number. A third option is available for those to whom neither of the first two conditions applies, although the portal does not yet explain how choosing that option may affect the application process.

Existing rules already require applicants to provide the names and EPIC numbers of family members wherever applicable. The new mechanism adds another layer of verification by linking applications with earlier SIR electoral records.

According to Election Commission sources, the system was first introduced during the Special Intensive Revision exercise in Bihar and has since been extended to other states and Union Territories where the SIR process has been conducted or is underway.
