Delhi Police Rejects Parliament March, Declares Jantar Mantar Protest Illegal

Delhi Police Rejects Parliament March, Declares Jantar Mantar Protest Illegal

Delhi Police has declared the ongoing protest by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar "unauthorized" and confirmed that permission will not be granted for the group's proposed Parliament march scheduled for Monday.

The organization had announced that it would march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament on the opening day of the Monsoon Session, demanding accountability from the central government over issues raised during its protest campaign. However, police officials said no formal written permission was sought for the march and emphasized that demonstrations heading toward Parliament would not be allowed.

According to senior police officials, Parliament and its surrounding areas fall under a high-security zone where unauthorized processions could disrupt law and order and create major traffic congestion in central Delhi. Authorities stated that any attempt to march toward Parliament would be stopped.

Delhi Police also maintained that CJP had originally received permission to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar for only one day. Officials alleged that the organization continued its sit-in beyond the approved period without obtaining fresh authorization, making the ongoing demonstration unlawful.

CJP leaders, however, rejected the police's claims. Party spokesperson Vaishnavi Gaur said the organization had informed police officials about the planned march during an in-person meeting, although she acknowledged that no written application had been submitted.

The protest began on June 20 over demands related to the NEET controversy. Activist Sonam Wangchuk later joined the demonstration with a hunger strike before being shifted by Delhi Police to Safdarjung Hospital. Following his removal, CJP founder Abhijit Deepak continued the hunger strike at the protest site.
