Could Sunlight Help Lower Breast Cancer Risk? Researchers Examine Vitamin D’s Role

Research is exploring a possible connection between sunlight, vitamin D and breast cancer risk, but experts caution that sunlight is not a proven preventive measure.

Could regular exposure to sunlight help reduce the risk of breast cancer? Some research suggests a possible link, particularly through the body’s production of vitamin D. However, sunlight should not be considered a proven way to prevent breast cancer.

Breast cancer can develop due to several factors, including genetic changes, certain cellular characteristics and a family history of the disease. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes, making regular screening and medical consultation important.

Researchers have explored whether vitamin D, produced naturally when skin is exposed to ultraviolet-B radiation, could have protective effects against cancer. Studies have suggested that women who spend more time outdoors may have a lower risk of breast cancer, although such findings do not establish that sunlight itself prevents the disease.

One proposed explanation is that vitamin D is converted in the liver and kidneys into calcitriol, a biologically active form that may influence cell growth and division. Researchers have also investigated whether vitamin D could interfere with the formation of new blood vessels that tumors need to grow and receive nutrients.

Some studies have reported substantial associations between adequate vitamin D levels and reduced breast cancer risk, but experts caution that the evidence remains complex and does not justify excessive sun exposure.

There is also no universally recommended amount of sunlight specifically for breast cancer prevention. Vitamin D can be obtained through diet and supplements when medically appropriate.

Excessive ultraviolet exposure increases the risk of skin cancer and premature skin ageing. Therefore, people should avoid prolonged, unprotected exposure, particularly during periods of intense sunlight.

For breast cancer prevention, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol, following recommended screening schedules and discussing individual risk factors with a doctor remain more established strategies.
