BPCL Develops Extreme Weather Diesel For Indian Army In Freezing Conditions

BPCL Develops Extreme Weather Diesel For Indian Army In Freezing Conditions

BPCL has developed Extreme Weather Grade diesel specifically for the Indian Army’s operations in extremely cold regions. The indigenous fuel is designed to prevent cold-weather fuel problems, improve vehicle starting and strengthen military logistics and fuel security at high-altitude border posts.

India’s state-run Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has introduced a specially developed diesel designed to keep military vehicles operational in extremely cold weather conditions.

The first railway rake carrying the new ‘Extreme Weather Grade’ (XWG) diesel departed from BPCL’s Bina Refinery in Madhya Pradesh on August 17 for military destinations. The fuel has been developed using indigenous technology at BPCL’s research and development facility, keeping in mind the challenging conditions faced by Indian troops deployed along high-altitude borders.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by Lieutenant General Mukesh Chadha, Director General of Supply and Transport, along with BPCL Director (Marketing) Shubhankar Sen and other senior officials.

The new diesel is designed to perform reliably even when temperatures fall significantly below the freezing point. Conventional diesel can face problems in extremely cold environments, including fuel thickening and filter blockage, which can make starting vehicles difficult.

According to BPCL, the Extreme Weather Grade diesel is formulated to reduce such risks. Its performance at very low temperatures is expected to help military vehicles start more easily and operate more reliably in snow-covered and high-altitude areas.

The specialised fuel could also reduce the need for additional maintenance of military vehicles and help protect fuel systems from cold-weather-related problems.

Shubhankar Sen described the indigenous technology as an important milestone for the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. He said the development would strengthen strategic fuel security and provide additional logistical support to the armed forces operating in some of India’s most challenging environments.

The launch marks another step towards improving the Indian Army’s mobility, logistics and operational preparedness in extreme weather conditions.
