Abhishek Anand’s journey from Bihar to Japan’s national cricket team is drawing attention ahead of the historic India-Japan T20I. Born in Rohtas district of Bihar, the 28-year-old completed his Chemistry degree at IIT Kanpur before moving to Tokyo for professional work. But his academic and career pursuits did not take cricket away from his life.
During his time at IIT Kanpur, Anand remained closely involved with the sport and even captained the institute’s cricket team. After relocating to Japan, he continued playing club cricket while balancing his professional responsibilities. His performances in Japan’s domestic cricket circuit eventually earned him an opportunity to represent the country internationally.
Anand made his T20I debut for Japan against the Cook Islands on May 9, 2025. According to figures cited in the report, he has since appeared in 18 T20Is, scoring 275 runs, including a highest score of 55, besides taking one wicket.
His story has gained further attention after a video featuring the cricketer went viral on social media. In the clip, Anand speaks about being a Bihari representing Japan, with his response attracting considerable interest among cricket followers.
Japan are scheduled to face India in a one-off men’s T20I on September 22 at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi. The match will be the first men’s international cricket meeting between the two countries and is being held under the Suzuki Cup banner to mark 75 years of India-Japan diplomatic relations.
However, Anand is not included in Japan’s announced 15-member squad for the fixture.
