Heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding across Guwahati on Monday, severely disrupting normal life as Assam's flood crisis intensified, affecting more than 1.70 lakh people across the state. Roads, residential areas and key traffic corridors were submerged after continuous downpours, leaving commuters stranded and prompting emergency response measures.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), urban flooding was reported in several parts of Kamrup Metro, including Zoo Tiniali, Hatigaon, Panjabari, Beltola, Chandmari, Maligaon, Anil Nagar, Rukminigaon and Lokhra. Authorities deployed dewatering pumps at major waterlogged locations to drain accumulated rainwater and restore traffic movement.
The flood situation remains critical across 12 districts, with over 580 villages under 30 revenue circles affected. More than 1,70,000 residents have been impacted, while floodwaters have submerged over 10,362 hectares of agricultural land, raising concerns over crop losses and livelihoods.
Rescue efforts have been intensified in the worst-hit regions. Multiple teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), equipped with rescue boats and trained personnel, have been deployed in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat to evacuate stranded residents and provide relief.
Officials also warned that the flood threat could worsen as five major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Burhidihing, Dikhow, Disang and Dhansiri, continue to flow above the danger mark. The ASDMA said it is closely monitoring the evolving situation while rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts continue across the affected districts to ensure public safety.
