Asian Games Medalists To Get Direct World Championship Berths Ahead Of Olympics

Asian Games Medalists To Get Direct World Championship Berths Ahead Of Olympics

The Boxing Federation of India has created a structured pathway linking Asian Games performances with World Championship and Olympic qualification opportunities.

Indian boxing authorities have introduced a qualification pathway aimed at strengthening the country’s prospects for the 2028 Olympic Games. Under the new selection plan, boxers who win medals at the upcoming Asian Games will receive direct entry into next year’s World Championships in their respective weight categories.

The decision by the Boxing Federation of India is intended to provide additional encouragement to leading boxers, including Lovlina Borgohain, while giving the national team a structured route towards the Los Angeles Olympics. The 2027 World Championships will be particularly important because Olympic qualification opportunities for the 2028 Games will begin through that competition.

According to the federation’s plan, Asian Games medallists will be selected directly for the World Championships. Gold medallists from the Elite National Championships will serve as reserves. In weight categories where India does not win an Asian Games medal, the national champion will receive the opportunity to compete at the World Championships.

National champions will also be considered for Olympic weight categories that are not included in the Asian Games programme. This system is designed to ensure that India has representation across relevant divisions while rewarding performances at major domestic and international competitions.

Even if Indian boxers fail to secure Olympic qualification at the World Championships, further opportunities will remain. An Asian qualification tournament will be held in China following the World Championships. Two additional qualification events are scheduled in Italy and Hungary in early 2028.

Overall, Indian boxers are expected to have four qualification opportunities for the 2028 Olympics. If further selection becomes necessary, boxers from the national camp will be considered according to rankings.
