Several prominent political leaders, senior officials and public figures have been issued notices during Delhi’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, after discrepancies were identified in voter records. The list includes former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Election Commissioner S.S. Sandhu.
The Election Commission’s exercise has flagged voters under categories including “No Mapping” and “Logical Discrepancies”, relating to inconsistencies or difficulties in linking current records with earlier electoral-roll data. Reports indicate that Advani’s record was among those categorised as unmapped with the previous SIR roll, while Sandhu’s notice reportedly relates to a discrepancy in the spelling of his name.
The list also includes former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and his wife Sudesh Dhankhar, former Supreme Court judge Madan Lokur, former Union minister Kapil Sibal, former minister Subramanian Swamy and Delhi minister Parvesh Verma, among others.
Kejriwal and members of his family were reportedly flagged because their records could not be linked with the previous SIR data. Meanwhile, Gupta received a notice over an age-related discrepancy in her electoral records. Her details were subsequently verified by election officials and her entry was validated for inclusion in the final roll.
More than 3.1 million electors in Delhi have reportedly received notices during the revision process. The exercise has also prompted legal scrutiny, with the Supreme Court scheduled to hear a plea concerning transparency surrounding the notices and the reasons cited for discrepancies.
