The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has secured a significant victory in the Punjab University Students’ Council election, defeating student organisations linked to the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress. The result has encouraged the BJP ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections, which are less than six months away.
ABVP candidate Ankit Vidhan won the president’s post by 573 votes. He secured 3,143 votes, while ASAP candidate Adil Brar received 2,637 votes. The Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) candidate finished with 2,263 votes.
The victory marks ABVP’s second consecutive win in the university’s students’ council. Its previous victory was particularly significant, as it ended a five-decade-long absence of the saffron student organisation from the top post.
This year’s contest, however, was considered more challenging. ABVP received support from the Student Organisation of India, the student wing associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal. BJP leaders are now looking at the electoral partnership as a possible indication of the political arithmetic that could emerge between the BJP and Akali Dal in the Assembly polls.
BJP sources argue that the result reflects continued support among young voters and could indicate a favourable mood among sections of the youth.
The AAP and Congress, however, have played down the significance of the outcome. They point out that Punjab University attracts students from several states, including Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi. Therefore, they argue, the result cannot be treated as a direct reflection of Punjab’s electorate.
