The Indian government has approved the sale of a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank to a company linked to Canada’s Fairfax Financial Holdings for ₹52,878.08 crore. The decision has raised an important question among customers: what will happen to their savings accounts, fixed deposits (FDs) and loans?
The approved buyer is 10955230 Canada Inc., the parent entity of Fairfax Financial Holdings. The government will sell its 30.48% stake, while the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) will sell 30.24%. After the transaction, the government is expected to retain 15% and LIC 19%. The deal still requires regulatory clearance, including approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Will your savings account or FD change?
A change in ownership does not, by itself, mean that customers must close their accounts or withdraw their deposits. Existing account and FD terms do not automatically change merely because a bank’s ownership changes. Customers should follow official communication from IDBI Bank for any future changes.
What about loans?
The sale announcement does not itself change your loan agreement or repayment schedule. Continue paying EMIs according to your existing terms unless the bank officially informs you otherwise.
Is your money insured?
The DICGC deposit insurance scheme covers eligible savings, current, recurring and fixed deposits up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per insured bank, including principal and interest. Deposits held across branches of the same bank are combined for this limit.
For now, customers should rely on official bank updates and avoid acting on rumours.
