Sealed Water Bottles May Not Always Be Safe, Check These Things Before Drinking

A sealed water bottle is not automatically safe to drink. Before buying bottled water, check the cap, tamper-evident ring, bottle condition, label and the water’s appearance, smell and taste. Also, do not rely on bottle-cap colours as a universal indicator of water quality.

A sealed water bottle may appear completely safe, but the seal alone does not guarantee that the water is suitable for drinking. Health experts and food-safety authorities generally advise consumers to check the bottle and its packaging carefully before opening it.

The first thing to inspect is the cap. Make sure it is firmly attached and does not turn or move unusually easily. Many bottles also have a plastic tamper-evident ring underneath the cap. On an unopened bottle, this ring should normally remain intact. If the ring appears broken, separated or damaged, it is better to choose another bottle.

The bottle itself should also be examined. Avoid bottles that are swollen, severely dented, leaking or otherwise damaged. Consumers should also avoid drinking water that looks unusually cloudy, has an abnormal colour or contains visible particles. After opening the bottle, any unusual smell or taste is another reason not to consume it.

There is also a widespread belief that the colour of a bottle cap indicates the type or quality of water inside. Claims suggesting that specific colours universally mean filtered, natural, electrolyte-enriched or alkaline water, however, are not a reliable rule. Cap colours can vary from one brand to another and may be selected for branding purposes.

Therefore, consumers should not judge water quality solely by the colour of the cap. Checking the integrity of the seal, packaging condition, product label and expiry or relevant date information is far more useful.

A few seconds of careful inspection before drinking bottled water can help consumers avoid potentially contaminated or improperly handled products and reduce the risk of waterborne illness.
