The Ajit Agarkar era as India’s chief selector has come to an end, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has started the process of finding his replacement. The board has invited applications for the vacant position on the men’s senior selection committee, with October 14 set as the deadline.
Agarkar’s tenure officially ended on October 4. During his time as chairman, India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha is currently handling the chairman’s role on an interim basis. Reports have also linked former wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel and former India batter and National Cricket Academy chief VVS Laxman to the selection process. However, the BCCI has not officially confirmed these names as its final shortlist.
The new selector will have a major responsibility. The committee selects India’s Test, ODI and T20I squads, identifies new talent and helps build the team’s future bench strength. The next chief selector will also be important as India prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Under BCCI rules, candidates must meet specific playing and retirement criteria. The board will now examine the applications before making its final choice. The key question is who will take charge of India’s team selection in the next phase.
