Portugal’s Burqa Ban Draws Praise From Taslima Nasrin

Portugal’s Burqa Ban Draws Praise From Taslima Nasrin

Portugal’s proposed burqa and niqab ban has sparked a fresh debate over women’s rights, religious freedom and personal liberty. Author Taslima Nasrin welcomed the move and called for similar restrictions worldwide, arguing that face-covering garments can represent patriarchal control over women.

Portugal has moved to restrict the wearing of face-covering garments such as the burqa and niqab in public spaces, a move that has triggered debate over religious freedom, women’s rights and personal liberty. The legislation was approved by the Portuguese parliament last Friday and has now been sent to the president for consideration.

Under the proposed law, face-covering clothing would be prohibited in public places, with exemptions reportedly applying to locations such as aircraft, diplomatic premises and places of worship. Violations could attract fines of up to €4,000, equivalent to roughly ₹4 lakh. The legislation also reportedly proposes a prison sentence of up to three years for anyone who forces another person to wear such clothing.

The development has received strong support from Bangladeshi-Swedish author and activist Taslima Nasrin. In a social media post on Tuesday, Nasrin welcomed Portugal’s decision and argued that similar restrictions should be introduced worldwide.

Nasrin said she does not regard the burqa as a symbol of religious freedom, but rather as an expression of patriarchal control over women. She argued that women should not be compelled to conceal their faces, hair or bodies and questioned the social inequality involved in allowing men to appear publicly without restrictions while women are expected to remain covered.

Her comments have added another dimension to the ongoing international debate surrounding face-covering garments, with supporters citing women’s autonomy and public identification, while critics raise concerns about religious freedom and individual rights.
