Pakistan Imposes Curfew, Internet Shutdown Ahead of Balochistan Independence Day

Pakistan Imposes Curfew, Internet Shutdown Ahead of Balochistan Independence Day

Pakistan has reportedly imposed curfews, restrictions and internet shutdowns in parts of Balochistan ahead of August 11, which separatist groups have declared as the region’s Independence Day. The move comes amid continuing tensions between Pakistani security forces and Baloch separatist organisations.

Pakistan has imposed restrictions across parts of Balochistan ahead of August 11, a day separatist groups have declared as the region’s Independence Day. Authorities have reportedly banned public celebrations, imposed restrictions under Section 144 and suspended internet services in several areas.

The measures come amid heightened tensions between Pakistani security forces and Baloch separatist organisations, including the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA). Reports suggest that security operations and arrests have increased in several districts as authorities attempt to prevent large-scale gatherings and celebrations.

Baloch separatist leader Mir Yar Baloch has reportedly criticised the restrictions in a statement on X, urging people not to follow what he described as unlawful orders imposed by the authorities. Supporters of the separatist movement have called on Baloch residents to display the flag of the proposed Republic of Balochistan at homes, markets, shops and public places on August 11.

The date has been chosen based on claims surrounding events in 1947, when Balochistan is said by separatist groups to have declared independence from British rule. Pakistan subsequently became independent on August 14, while India gained independence on August 15.

Balochistan has witnessed a long-running insurgency against Pakistani rule. The conflict has intensified over issues including political autonomy, resource control and alleged human rights abuses. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has further heightened tensions, with separatist groups accusing Islamabad of exploiting the province’s mineral resources.

Pakistan’s security establishment continues to confront armed groups seeking independence, while the BLA remains a major militant organisation operating in the region. The latest restrictions highlight the continuing political and security tensions surrounding Balochistan.
