India and the United States are looking to strengthen their strategic partnership, with energy cooperation, trade and tariffs among the key issues surrounding talks between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Mumbai on October 20.
The meeting is expected to review bilateral relations and explore ways to expand cooperation in energy, defence, trade and critical technologies. Regional and global developments, including the situation in West Asia and the Ukraine conflict, are also important areas of discussion.
Russian oil purchases remain a sensitive issue in India-US relations. Washington has considered sanctions and additional tariff measures targeting countries that continue economic engagement with Russia. India, meanwhile, has stressed the importance of protecting its energy security and maintaining diversified sources of supply.
Ahead of his India visit, Rubio said ongoing trade negotiations had been taken into account in decisions concerning possible waivers related to Russian oil sanctions. He also indicated that the two countries were close to finalising a trade agreement.
However, the meeting’s confirmed decisions, if any, must be established through official statements from India’s Ministry of External Affairs or the US State Department. No agreement on tariffs, Russian oil purchases or other specific measures should be assumed without such confirmation.
The outcome could provide a clearer picture of the next steps in trade negotiations and wider energy cooperation. Any effect on domestic fuel prices remains uncertain and cannot be concluded from the meeting agenda alone.
