Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar has received praise from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his actions helped prevent a potentially catastrophic incident aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
Flight FZ1073 was carrying 174 passengers when a violent confrontation reportedly erupted inside the cockpit on September 30. According to reports, the co-pilot attacked Machchhar and the aircraft subsequently plunged nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and other crew members to intervene.
Passengers and two off-duty pilots aboard the aircraft helped overpower the attacker and regain control of the situation. The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. The passengers were subsequently transported onward to Israel on another aircraft.
Machchhar was taken to hospital for treatment and underwent surgery. Reports said he remained in stable condition while authorities continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the cockpit confrontation. The motive behind the incident has not been established, and officials have cautioned against premature conclusions.
Modi and Murmu publicly recognised Machchhar's actions, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised the Indian captain and the passengers who intervened. The incident has prompted renewed attention to aviation security and cockpit safety. Israel has said it plans to strengthen checks on pilots operating flights into the country.
